Light is not just for vision. It also has other biological functions, which is why exposure to light can be used to treat certain sleep and mood disorders. Conversely, inappropriate exposure to light can promote the development of certain diseases.<\/p>\n

The overall objective of this NSERC-funded research program is to understand how light is interpreted and used by the human body clock and how exposure to light can cause or treat sleep-wake cycle adjustment problems. We hope that the results may lead to new treatments based on the manipulation of exposure and non-visual sensitivity to light.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 des moniteurs ambulatoires, nous avons mesur\u00e9 l\u2019exposition \u00e0 la lumi\u00e8re, 24 heures sur 24, de travailleurs de nuit pour d\u00e9terminer leur profil d\u2019exposition et le mettre en relation avec l\u2019ajustement de leur horloge biologique.\n Nous avons ensuite mod\u00e9lis\u00e9 et test\u00e9 en laboratoire les profils les plus int\u00e9ressants pour \u00e9valuer leur potentiel \u00e0 r\u00e9duire les probl\u00e8mes de sommeil et de vigilance des travailleurs de nuit. Nous nous sommes aussi int\u00e9ress\u00e9s aux\n effets \u00ab\u00a0toxiques\u00a0\u00bb de l\u2019exposition nocturne \u00e0 la lumi\u00e8re chez les travailleurs de nuit. Cette question a \u00e9t\u00e9 abord\u00e9e \u00e0 la fois sur le terrain, chez de vrais travailleurs de nuit, et dans les conditions contr\u00f4l\u00e9es d\u2019une \u00e9tude de simulation\n en laboratoire. Nous avons identifi\u00e9 certaines caract\u00e9ristiques de l\u2019exposition \u00e0 la lumi\u00e8re qui sont associ\u00e9es \u00e0 une diminution de la production de m\u00e9latonine chez les travailleurs de nuit, parce qu\u2019une telle diminution a \u00e9t\u00e9 associ\u00e9e\n \u00e0 une augmentation de risques de cancer dans cette population.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

This study follows on from our research on chronotypes in the early 2000s. Unlike late chronotypes which consider themselves well adapted even if they tend to go to bed and get up late, some people (especially young adults) do complain that they are not able to bring their sleep schedule forward to meet the demands of a regular work or study schedule. Although this problem is very common, we do not really know the cause (s). In this project, we are evaluating the role of light in this sleep-wake disorder.
